INTREPID Darren Houlton is attempting to row across the English channel in a kayak.

The 35-year-old, of Werrington, is raising cash for The Hospice of the Good Shepherd, which cares for people with life-limiting illnesses in Wales.

He decided to take up the challenge to support a friend from Warrington-based Dante Fire and Security – where Darren works as an operations manager – whose father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and needed the care of the hospice.

Normally athletes attempting to row 28 miles of rough seas between England and France spend a year in training, but after suffering a shoulder injury while gardening, Darren has been limited to just four weeks, with just another month to go before he attempts his challenge.
